My son, who recently turned 9, has been studying karate at 5150 since he was 3. He began as a tiny thing, what they call a "kinderkick", and is now a first-degree junior black belt. 5150 gets my highest recommendation as a place where, in the context of learning martial arts, children can deeply increase their levels of focus, discipline, motor skills, self-confidence, respect for others, and a host of other extremely positive bi-products that can be applied to all aspects of life and learning. My son is an excellent student, athlete and musician, and to a good extent I attribute his successes in areas outside of karate to the skills he has developed from an early age at 5150. The teachers at the school are outstanding. They strike the perfect balance between no-nonsense mentors providing serious instruction with a nurturing, loving, family environment. In their work with children, they never forget that they are dealing with kids, and their use of humor goes a long way to keep little ones motivated. They are insightful in evaluating children based on their individual characteristics and they are willing to push them along with a firmer hand as appropriate. My son has cemented lasting friendships with other children attending 5150 and his love and respect for his teachers, teachers who have been their consistently over the course of six years, is really a joy to watch. If you're thinking of enrolling your child in a martial arts school, I recommend 5150 Martial Arts without reservation.

I have two daughters who are polar opposites. One is beyond hyper and confident, the other is shy and not as confident in herself. 5150 Martial Arts staff connected with each of my daughters, making them each feel special as individuals. They keep the girls laughing and serious all at once in class and bring out confident, self-disciplined girls. Additionally, as a parent sitting and watching, waiting till class is over you feel welcomed, respected and understood. There is no push to give more than you or your children want to give to the study of Martial Arts, simply guidance. The girls always leave with smiles on their faces and a sense of accomplishment in their heart. If you are looking for a place to bring your children to study Martial Arts I highly recommend you come to 5150 Martial Arts!

Two of our children train at 5150 and we could not be happier. We feel the instructors do a great job keeping the kids focused while also allowing them to have fun. All of the Sensei's and Professor strive to make a personal connection with the kids. They call our children by name in class, even when it has been months since our last Jiu Jitsu visit. :-) We appreciate the effort 5150 puts into not only training the children but bonding with the families. We could not be happier with our decision to try 5150.

My first interaction with 5150 came at a high school track, where I saw students and parents running around the track working out together. As a parent that wanted to enroll my kids in a martial arts school, I immediately liked how involved the parents were with their children's training. Soon afterwards, not only have we enrolled the kids, but my wife and I are members of the school as well. Professor O'Keefe and Sensei Shapiro are great teachers, they have incredible patience with the kids and the are encouraging. But I also like how they are firm and demanding as well. While they're able to keep the kids motivated with encouragement and fun, they also don't allow fooling around to get out of hand. As a member of the adult class, I feel like I am constantly pushed to get better, and I leave each class looking forward to the next one, even as I am exhausted from the intense workout. My family and I are currently in the kickboxing and self defense classes, but look forward to starting Jiu Jitsu too. If you're looking for a fun, safe environment for you family to learn self defense and martial arts, 5150 is the place the be. The community here is great, and the higher ranking belts are really helpful to those of us that are just starting out. There is a sense of family and friendship here, and we're happy to be a part of it.

Amazing place, amazing people, and an amazing experience! The classes don't just teach martial arts as they also focus on life experiences, positive values, and interaction with others. I have watched my children's confidence level skyrocket in a short amount of time. I strongly recommend 5150.

It's been almost 20 years when I first walked in this dojo and met the most amazing group of instructors and classmates! I'm proud to be a part of this academy for all these years and years to come!! Thank you Shihan O'Keefe, Sensei Shapiro and Sensei Alvarez for making 5150 THE PLACE to train, to learn, to meet great people, to earn your black belt but most of all a really fun place to be.. not only for the young ones but also for the young once. Every time I come to class I make me happy and I will continue to do so along with my boys!! Thank you.
